Hello smile

I'm Siobhan Curran/Kisa Naumova, and this is my weblog. I tend to write about stuff like crossdressing, Macs, code, cats, wine and Second Life, but in general it's just an ongoing conversation about all sorts of stuff. If you'd like to know a little bit more about what this all is, I recommend starting on this page which has a little bit of info on who I am, and what I'm trying to do — or you could dive into my five years worth of archives if you like.

Otherwise, feel free to close this box and explore...

Just a small thought about Easter, what with it being, you know, Easter and all that.

Considering that the entire Christian faith seems to rest on what's being celebrated up the road from me (Damm you and your infernal bells, waking me up on a Sunday morning), it's always struck me as odd that the big celebrations are reserved for Christmas. I think there are two reasons for this:

  1. Why can't the Church of England just pick one date, and quit faffing around with "The fifth Sunday after the Archbishop of Canterbury's crocuses first appear" (or whatever it is)?

  2. I blame the ones that benefit from it all: children and shops.

See, at Christmas, everybody's happy. We all get Stuff™ (wanted or not), children are placated for a few nanoseconds by whatever it is that they're into these days (in my day, you were lucky to get a satsuma), and the shops all chuckle to themselves at the over-kerchinginess of their tills.

At Easter, the only people rolling in it (Ha! "Rolling"! Like what you do with eggs! Oh, never mind) are Cadburys and perhaps Hallmark.

Happy Easter  I'm going out to buy myself a Cream Egg because nobody saw fit to send me anything this year.

I recommend the original size, and a large monitor

That's a cool picture. I've seen a few like that while scrounging around Flickr but that's an especially good one given the number of photos involved.

Yeah, I always thought the size of the celebrations for Easter and Christmas were odd to. But you can't fight the masses really.

Feh.

given the number of photos involved.

It's not even half as many that made up this one

I'm still not entirely happy with these montages though. Part of me wants them to fit together perfectly — rather than being all sloppy near the edges. Another part of me thinks I actually use too many pictures to make them, which is why certain parts seem a little fudgey.

I think part of the problem, is that I'm using too wide a lens. If I stuck to my 50mm, then they might turn out a little less messy...

The big celebrations are reserved for Christmas? No, they are just better attended.

As to the date of Easter, in 577A.D. Easter was celebrated on 3 different days in England depending on which calendar you preferred (even mid-week). Some years later, King Oswy (for it was he) had married a Saxon princess and was worried because one of them would be celebrating while the other was fasting. So he called the synod of Whitby in 664. He preferred the date according to Northumbrian tradition (as established by St. Columba). His wife preferred the date according to Roman tradition (as established by St. Peter). The synod didn't last long because Oswy didn't want to argue with St. Peter about it on Judgement day and gave in to his wife's system. And it has been so ever since.

That still doesn't explain why either tradition couldn't just pick one date and stick to it

Lancaster Castle

Spot the bit where I fucked up and had to go back two hours later to reshoot

Would it be the little bit on the right, since there's a different part of a car there?

Uhh....the blue dot at the left of the Castle entrance? Just guessing....

That's a sign, doofus.

You're like a double-act you two

Actually, it's the whole of the right hand side. WHen I got home, I realised I'd missed a bit (again, like in this one) so went back up the hill to try and fill in the gap.

As well as the 'overlapping' cars, there's the trace of a red 'ghost car' just outside the main Castle gate where I've filled in a hole.

One day, I'll get one of these right first time

That's enough hand-stitched panoramic montages for a bit, I feel. They do my head in (and Photoshop starts screaming at me after about 100 layers)

....you should see us in real life if you want a double act.

really?
