These are all the things in Siobhan's archives tagged as "secondlife". If you want to narrow it down, you can use more than one tag, seperating them with a space.

I am, I think, on record in a fair few places as being someone who finds the practice of replicating Real Life environments in Second Life to be a bit tedious.

Contrary to popular belief, I don't just sit here all day pressing refresh on my own blog, I do spend a large amount of time outside of the confines of my own local network, reading other people's blogs. The thing is though, I don't always comment on them, perhaps because I don't think I've anything substantial to contribute (despite the head-nodding inducement of a well-written post), or perhaps because I feel I need to go away and think about it for a while - uncharacteristically curbing my usual tendancy to jump in and spout drunken rantings.
I wrote a bit about this the other day - essentially, not wanting to repeat myself too much, it's a web script that takes a plain, unformatted chatlog (from Second Life, but could be tweaked to work with other things), and tries to present it in a way that's a little more 'readable'.

Right this second, blokes in frocks from all over the country are most likely chin-wagging over coffee on Canal Street in Manchester, comparing lipgloss and beard-cover, waving at each other in affected campishness. I, however, am sat with my feet up on > Ian and > Kim's sofa in their living room in London, preparing myself to go to SLUK.
I'm sure it's not something that crosses anyone else's mind ecept my own, but I do get very aware/concerned when my writing trails off into irrelevent silence.

This is my new favourite group. A collection of those weird moments in Second Life where things just go a little wronger than usual - I've got a few glitch-shots dotted through my stream. I'll have to dig them out and add them. But for now, my pubic hair disaster will have to do

Apologies for the directionless rambling. I guess I talk the same way that I write - sidetracking all over the place, and eventually forgetting the plot. But hey. To be honest, I wouldn't sit down and watch this - the video is really just me flapping my hands about. I'd have it on in the background while doing the dishes or something...
Apologies in advance (1) to Daft Punk, I'm sorry I used your music. (2) to everyone else. I'm sorry I used Daft Punk's music.

About eighteen months ago or so, a friend and I used to hang around various newbie areas in Second Life, intent on being 'helpful' and 'instructive'. I remember intensly the warm welcome I'd had from > Torley and Tesla the minute I'd stepped off Orientation Island, and I enjoyed giving a small fraction of that welcome back to people who were stumbling into the main grid for the first time.
I've been struck, recently, at a couple of large(ish) discussions in Second Life, how hard it is to keep abreast of the conversation flow. The more avies in attendance, the more the topic meanders around the issues, and the more sub-threaded chats emerge.
Sculptie/Maya stuff from Qarl Linden
Oh bugger. That was on my list of things to make.
A few weeks ago, I got a tp from a friend to pop over to her house, and was rather surprised to find a short balding man in her place. A couple of nights previously, I'd had an email from the same friend, asking me how much I'd charge to make an avatar of someone.
Do you ever get the feeling that wherever you go, someone's been there before?

Just going back to the thing I was talking about the other day, of trying to join the gap between two prims smoothly, you may recall that although what I came up with worked, it was rather inelegant (to say the least). Simply interpolating the steps from one to the other used far too many prims, all of which overlapped, and took a straight-line path. For the past week though, I've been wondering if I could plot a three-dimensional bezier curve between them instead, and I finally got around to trying it out this morning.
OK, right. See this?
The lawsuit between Stroker Serpentine and Volkov Catteneo has received its fair share of discussion and linkage (for example), but I thought - carelessly disregarding any form of copyright infringement issues (sorry More4, really I'm sorry, I used to play with one of your newsreaders when I was young if that'll help things ... and his Dad's my brother's Godfather) - I just had to share this bizarroworld report that jumped out of my TV screen at me...

There are (amongst other things, of course) two things in relation to technology and code that get me excited: (1) using a set of restricted tools to achieve something previously thought impossible, and (2) getting tools to do things they weren't necessarily designed for.

Thaumata has gathered together a list on the SL WIki of every single SL group on Flickr - and quite frankly, it rocks. And so does she.
Having a rough time logging in and out of SL this afternoon. One crash so far, and some frustratedly annoying moments wondering why I couldn't buy anything, before realising that my L$ balance was loading properly.
"Would a Man of Business be more ashamed to associate his product with ranting criminal pornographers, or a fluffy bundle of inherent goodness?" - as a lover of both, I'm torn
"This 'desktop' metaphor is no good. I can't put my coffee and papers on it!" - Tateru also seems to have had "getting it" on her mind recently (Second Life Insider)
I'm on a bit of a roll today :)
Robbie Dingo building Van Gogh's "Starry Night". A wonderfully beautiful piece of machinima.
Katharine Berry's AJAX-based SL client - seriously impressive stuff. Katharine deserves a hell of a lot of kudos for this
Hmm. This will, I feel, take a couple of Twitters and a Flickr pic to set the scene...
This is what's on the plasma screen, BTW...

Typical. I go away for a couple of days, and the entire world changes.
Remember my cunning little combination of PHP and LSL scripts to turn Illustrator files into fully-rezzed objects in Second Life? Well, now that I've got the island, I've got the space (and prims) to do something I've been dying to have a go at for ages - try it out at full size :D
